6-Week Defensive Skills Program: Building Elite Outfield & Infield Defenders
Week 1: Building the Foundation
This week focuses on establishing strong fundamentals and proper movement patterns. Players learn correct footwork, clean glove presentation, and essential outfield routes. The goal is to build confidence early and ensure every athlete develops solid, repeatable defensive habits.
Week 2: Improving Consistency & Decision-Making
Athletes learn to make plays more efficiently through better angles, quicker reactions, and improved lateral movement. Infielders work on double-play feeds and turns, while outfielders sharpen route-running and communication. This week builds consistency and elevates each player’s “baseball IQ.”
Week 3: Speed, Reads & Game Movement
Week 3 introduces speed and athleticism. Infielders practice throwing on the run and handling tough hops, while outfielders take deep balls at full sprint and refine gap communication. The focus is on staying under control while moving fast—a critical skill as competition intensifies.
Week 4: Expanding Range & Making Advanced Plays
This is where athletes start making higher-level defensive plays. Infielders tackle slow rollers, bad hops, and long throws across the diamond; outfielders master over-the-shoulder catches, tracking fly balls in the sun, and safe diving mechanics. The emphasis is on extending range and executing the plays that separate good defenders from great ones.
Week 5: Situational Defense & Smart Baseball
Players now apply their skills in real game situations: bunt coverages, rundown execution, cutoffs and relays, tag plays, and smart decision-making with runners on base. This week teaches the strategic side of defense—helping athletes understand not just how to make plays, but why and when.
Week 6: Game-Speed Mastery
The final week puts everything together at full game speed. Infielders run complete defensive circuits, and outfielders take live reads off the bat while competing in advanced throwing and crow-hop challenges. This week builds confidence, mental toughness, and true readiness for competition—the perfect culmination of a strong 6-week program.
